Why Performance Improvements May Change Over Time
Purpose
This page explains why performance can improve in stages after installation, and why results may vary across pages and time.
Performance is a moving target
Dealership websites change frequently. Performance can shift as:
- third party vendors update their scripts
- new tags are added for marketing or analytics
- platform releases change templates
- seasonal campaigns add new widgets or content
Even if Speed Layer stays the same, the environment it runs in can change.
Page types behave differently
A homepage, an SRP, and a VDP can have very different load patterns. It is normal for performance improvements to be stronger on some page types than others.
Measurements can fluctuate
Performance scores and metrics can fluctuate due to:
- device and network differences
- test location and conditions
- caching behavior
- traffic mix changes
If you use Google tools, review how they explain the difference between lab data and field data:
- Chrome UX Report (Google): https://developer.chrome.com/docs/crux/
- PageSpeed Insights (Google): https://pagespeed.web.dev/
What to do when performance changes
When you see changes over time:
- Look at trends over multiple days
- Compare the same page type across time
- Identify whether a new tool or tag was introduced
If a change seems correlated with a new vendor script or platform update, that detail is often the key to diagnosing the shift.
